The second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura should top your holiday list if you’re looking to have some fun in the sun. The island boasts the enviable year round climate that you’d expect from being the Canary Island that is closest to the Sahara desert. So while you can rely on the sun shining you can focus on which part of the Fuerteventura holiday vibe to enjoy.
Fuerteventura is most well known for its outstanding water sports. While propping up on a sun lounger for most of the day may be tempting, holidaymakers would miss out if they didn’t partake in one of the island’s many activities. Fuerteventura holidays are the perfect escape if you’re looking to learn how to kite surf or want to refine your scuba diving skills. The island is also no slouch when it comes to nights out and you can opt for the dance-floor or a great mix of restaurants. In short, Fuerteventura is a one-stop shop no matter what kind of holiday you are looking for.

Perfect for a summer or winter holiday, the island of Fuerteventura boasts a fantastic climate, with plenty of warm, dry days accompanied by lots of sunshine. Like the rest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura enjoys spring-like weather throughout the year, with the average temperature of 21c.
The close proximity to the African coastline ensures plenty of sunshine, with Fuerteventura boasting an average of 320 sun-filled days a year. Closer to Africa than the other Canaries Islands, Fuerteventura is the driest of them all, receiving the hotter trade winds from the North and less rain. The island does receive a little rainfall, generally between October and March, but the showers tend to be brief and generally affect the north and the higher parts of the island. What little precipitation the island does receive adds greenery to the central and north-west region, but in general the rest of Fuerteventura is quite desert-like and rather barren, especially the east.
The Canary Islands are in the same time zone as the UK. Local time is GMT in the winter (GMT +1 between the last Sunday in March and the Saturday before the last Sunday in October).
Spanish is the official language, but
English is widely understood in areas frequented by tourists.
Electrical current is 220 or 225 volts, 50Hz.
European-style two-pin plugs are standard.
Hotel and restaurant bills usually include service charges, but additional tips are welcomed for services rendered. In established restaurants tips of about 10% are expected. Drivers of metered taxis expect small tips and it is customary to tip usually 5-10% for most services, including guides.
The international access code for Spain is +34. The outgoing code is 00 followed by the relevant country code (e.g. 0044 for the United Kingdom).
