Currency

Holiday CurrencyThe official currency is the New Turkish Lira (TRY), which was introduced on 1 January 2005, whereby six zeros were dropped from the TL and the sub-unit New Kurush was created.  Currency can be exchanged at banks, exchange booths, post offices, airports and ferry ports; banks have the worst rates and highest commissions, but will exchange lesser known foreign currencies.

Banks open mainly Monday to Friday, but some are open daily in tourist areas.  ATMs are widely available in major cities and tourist areas, but Turkish ATM keypads usually do not have letters of the alphabet on their keys.  Most bank branches have ATMs which accept Cirrus and Plus.  Major credit cards are widely accepted; the most popular are Visa or MasterCard, but American Express is accepted in many of the more expensive places.  Travellers cheques can be exchanged at some banks and currency exchange offices, but are not as welcome as cash or credit cards.  US dollars or Euros are preferred.  Some hotels in the most popular destinations accept US dollars as payment.

Turkey Climate

Holiday WeatherSouthern and Western Turkey are all about making the most of the sea and the combination of hot sun and warm waters amount to the ideal beach holiday combination.   If you are visiting the Aegean or Mediterranean coasts then expect typically long, hot summers to accompany the inviting beaches and turquoise waters.  Average temperatures of around 28-32 degrees are normal in high season and rainfall is uncommon in summer leaving you to enjoy the beach.

Spring and Autumn in particular are very pleasant with between 8 and 9 hours of sunshine a day and temperatures in the mid 20's.  Turkey caters to tourists outside the summer months so all of the usual attractions are on offer but with less visitors to share them with.  The sometimes extreme heat of inland Turkey can be off-putting in high summer so spring and autumn are ideal times for heading away from the coast and exploring this fascinating country.
